INTERVENER for DEAF/BLIND
Adams Central Middle/High School
An intervener is a one-to-one service provider with specialized training and skills to work with students who are deaf-blind. The intervener helps the student gather information, learn concepts and skills, develop communication and language, and establish relationships that lead to greater independence. Interveners work under the direct supervision of a certified staff member.
This is a part-time position (25 hours) per week at Adams Central Middle/High School.
Essential Job Functions
- Facilitates access to the environmental information that is usually gained through vision and hearing which is unavailable or incomplete to the student who is deaf-blind.
- Facilitates the development and/or use of the student's receptive and expressive communication skills in their mode(s) of communication.
- Develop an interactive relationship with the student who is deaf-blind that promotes social and emotional development and well-being.
-Prepares materials for the student with whom he/she works in coordination with the teacher.
-Abide by policies and procedures established by North Adams Community Schools, Adams Central Community Schools, and Adams Wells Special Services Cooperative
-Attend regularly scheduled planning meetings with the teacher.

- Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.

- Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with students with special needs.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor(s) as required.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Note: Paid intervener training will be provided through the completion of modules provided by Indiana Deaf-Blind Services Project.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
- Works in standard office and school building environments.
- Ability to work outdoors during outdoor student activities and arrival/dismissal of the student.
Qualifications Profile
Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Successful completion of college level coursework or passing of examination as required by the No Child Left Behind Act.
- Display willingness to learn American Sign Language and Braille.
- Prior experience working with children with exceptional needs desirable.
- Beginning knowledge of American Sign Language desirable.
